When I miss Skew, I'd do my mighty best to recall all the times we had together. Be it having a good laugh or getting pissed at each other (mostly me at him), I'd savour the memories of us holding hands, kissing and the notes and cards and poems he used to write to me.
Skew explained that he no longer writes for me because he feels happy (now we're steady together) and his happiness needs no form of expression. He prefers to be introspective.
'I know the means to be happy and I strive towards it. And perhaps that's why I'm running out of the emotions required for good poetry.'
Meanwhile, I'm one who feeds on dramatic out-of-this-world head-over-heels cannot-live-without romance, helium-filled pink balloons, flowers and William Blake's poems. SIGH.
Anyhoo, I was fiddling with the cards Skew used to send me and he wrote me this one very lovely poem for my 25th birthday.
Another Year
How time sneaks us by
As we navigate on life's choppy waters.
Too much on the next colliding wave
And too little on the journey.
Today's a good day;
Unlade your cargo and sieve
Blessings from misfortunes
Of the year gone past.
The chaotic world pauses
In the calm habour,
So relax your well-worn
Soul and celebrate your spirit.
Slow down and find this day
A familiar smile that never left
My lips, just for you.
Just as it'll always be
Another year.

Me: Good morning, Mr. K.
Boss: Stop smiling. It's Tuesday morning and everybody has to work.
Me: Well... I like to start my day with a smile.
Boss: Yeah right.
That's my first day. A church mate who has worked with my current boss on a partnership level told me not to take comments from ang mohs too personally. I couldn't agree more. In fact, I find my boss a tad hilarious when he flares with anger. Guess I've seen enough white people to know that they're not monsters, aliens or anything really overly superior than us Asians. I am not about to be intimidated by a being who is simply fairer, taller and has a louder voice than me. So friends, if you're worried about me, I'm gonna survive. ;)
The web surfing restrictions at work has made it harder for me to keep up with friends real-time though. I haven't been able to tell Yann how I'm doing, help aJ in her wedding preparations, or talk nonsense with Archie. I can't check how cash-poor I am via internet banking nor CPF-rich I am. I sure miss the sights and sounds at Keong Saik Road. At where my new office is, all I see are loads of fashion-less OLs and yabbing executives. The traffic sure is hell too. I miss Maxwell food centre and Tong Ah kopitiam...
Oh well... something's gotta give. At least I have legitimate reasons to surf food blogs, review restaurants and stare at awesome food pictures. Oh well oh well. Tomorrow evening, I'll be reviewing 2AM Dessert Bar at Holland Village. With my boss. I'll tell you how it goes. Maybe he might murder me for smiling too much after a chocolate high.
Before I sign off to do work (i.e. research on molecular gastronomy), I leave you with a sweet note written by Archie (although I have an unexplainable dislike for sunflowers).
Without food is like a day without sunshine,
xoxo Gie

Is it un-girl to like Siamese Fighting Fish? Heh. Last night, Archie got me a surprise - three fighting fishes (aka Bettas) courtesy of his Betta-breeder friend. After some consideration, I decided to bring just one home from Archie's place. This decision proved to be right, because only five minutes into the car ride, one-third of the glass tank's water was spilled all over my Anise black skirt. -_-"
A marine blue longtail. Halfmoon? Delta tail? Super delta? I'm still figuring out which breed this is... I have been reading up so much about dwarf hamsters (the plan was to get one this month...) but guess now my focus could change =)

Archie pocketed Eeyore and drove home (literally) =) Though I wished it's a real dwarf hamster coming home with us. I like the lil' break. Away from work. Away from hypocrisy. Away from gatekeepers. A breather is always underrated.

Today's our 6th month of together-ness.
*****
I texted Karen, crossing my fingers hoping she'd be free for the evening to chill out with me. At a fast-food joint. I didn't feel my cough would appreciate a Dirty Lychee Martini.
*****
Archie's off to Kukup for the weekend with his friends. I had to stay back to fall sick and despite that, still work. An exhibition is setting up over the weekend at Expo.
*****
Karen took damn long to reply. Turned out she is currently in Shanghai. Busy with 'stuff'. Oops. I felt like I was interrupting. =)
*****
Many conversations ago, Archie mentioned that we should have gotten together two years ago. Many conversations later, he's still onto it. In fact, he wanted an explanation why I didn't/couldn't accept him then.
My simple reply was, "You weren't mature enough,'
He couldn't take it lying down. He probed further, asking questions and questioning my sanity (then and now). He insisted that he couldn't be any different from two years ago. But dude, if your mental level 'still the same' then and now, you have a serious problem. People should age with wisdom and grace. Which is why I find George Clooney irresistible sexy.
I don't think the two years of non-coupledom between us was a waste of time. We simply spent it building a deeper-than-supercial friendship. I elevated him from a acquaintance to a friend. A friend who gets my sarcasm. A friend who laughes at my jokes at him. A friend who... well, you already know what a friend does. =)
But it felt like the right person at the wrong time. Sounds absurd. There was a missing link between us. But deep down, I know 'this is a very nice guy and possibly...'
Many years ago, I was a younger girl who craved for some sense of maturity - womanhood. I went shopping for lingerie. But I found something else instead - a silky cream nightgown. A piece of clothing no young girl in her teens should set eyes on. I bought it anyway. But I soon learnt why it just wasn't for me. My boobs and back couldn't fill the curves of the gown. I was scrawny and looked like a kid in her mother's power suit. Unfitting.
So I chucked the gown aside and put it behind my mind. I love the gown but it just wasn't for me then. Fast forward a few years, I chanced upon the same gown (a little yellow though) during a spring clean. It was different when I put it on again. The physical *ahem* aside, I was a more womanly, more comfortable in my own skin. It wasn't simply a pretty little gown which resembles what the Sleeping Beauty could be wearing; it was more like an empowerment bestowed to a woman of what could be... (if I even make sense)
Anyway, it's like adding time to cheese. Flavour, aroma, texture don't come just after you leave a bottle of milk to sour. The environment and its natural bacteria influences the type of cheese produced. But after all the fussing, once passed the ripening stage, you'd be rewarded. Patience, my friend, is key to good stuff.
I don't think I'll ever appreciate Archie more if we had been together two years ago. The period of non-coupledom saw us grew up, roughed up, matured in many ways. Life has its funny ways of putting pieces together. The edges were sanded and polished to make the puzzles fit, if not better.
There are more to learn and wise up from. Archie and I have our differences. We talked about it. We cried about it (actually just me crying and him sighing). We sorted things out. We kissed and made up. Each time we try a little and laugh.
I'm not sure how time would wear off the you-used-to-do-this-or-that-for-me. I just hope it wouldn't wear down the I-will-love-you-forever.

Well, not really. =) Archie and I had a morning walk at MacRichte Reservoir. My second time hiking in the park. We took a slightly different route this time and took in the wonderful bird's eye view of the entire reserve at the top of Jelutong Tower. Pity I left my Sony Cybershot's battery in office (i was charging it and forgot!!); I could have taken some good pictures.
Ah, anyway we're visiting the museum tomorrow. Despite the not-so-fantastic review Karen gave, I still would like to view the Kangxi exhibition. It's open house day this weekend anyway. But I will brace myself for screaming running kids and jolting crowds. Hopefully not! I hope the crowd (whoever it consists of) goes to Orchard Road and shop their arses off and stay away from the museum!

Somewhere in a women's magazine I've read, that fights are hallmarks which will define a still-fresh sparkly new relationship. Apparently they are necessary. You mature; you learn to compromise, be more understanding and accommodating toward your partner. Everyone grows two inches taller after each fight. Sounds like a good plan in an all ideal relationship-nurturing medium. Except, an escapist like me will run in the other direction, never to return to realise the goodness of 'compromise'.
I am a lousy girlfriend.
I don't remember the last time I got SQ gifts from my overseas trips. I refuse to give him a good shoulder rub when he's visibly tired. I don't make him coffee. I made him stay up late to play Bingo with me. I roll my eyes at almost everything he says. I like doing the opposite of everything he wants. If we ever go into a fight, it'd most probably be me not stroking his ego enough.
'You don't know the person until the shit goes down'
Don't remember who said that but I wasn't counting on having fights to get to 'know' SQ. I like it drama-less. Because I've got enough headaches in life. Why do I need another one? But if it is necessary, then it better be about life-changing stuff such as erm... his pay check, my shopaholic issue, my unforgiving displeasure of him wearing flip-flops, his utmost dislike of my mother's Cantonese herbal soups or my unreasonable demand of him to get me cheesecake at 10pm. Stuff like that, which might make sense to argue about.
We had a few spits and spats, but they were the silliest matters I'd never imagined. There was something about me not liking kids (somewhat not very true). Another about the hotel room we couldn't book for his birthday (very silly). And the other one about my ex.
Woah! The Ex. Yes, sensitive issue I've been always cautiously avoiding. But somehow we found ourselves treading on this thin line. I over-reacted. He raised his voice at me. And I hung up.
Hanging up the phone on someone is the very last thing I expect of myself. It's dang rude! But being the ultra escapist with a huge ego problem, I found myself incapable of handling conflicts with SQ. I could bang the table and demand results from my crew, throw sarcasm at unreasonable homo sapiens and bargain my way through every sticky situation (almost). Yet I find myself stumped and seemingly silly in the face of his agitation. The best I could do is to cry, empty the box of dark chocolate and go back to more crying.
Idiot's guide to conflicts: talk things out.
Friends know I'm damn good a mediator. But I actually suck at ironing out my own problems. A hundred and one thoughts bubbled up in my mind, but never quite linked up to what I really want to say. If there is one lesson I've learnt: I am rotten with explanation. Momentarily I wished I was born a natural linguist. Or something in the same vein. I was up against the ex-editor of some trashy newsletter of SMU who blabbers a long string of nouns and verbs which jumbles themselves up upon entering my brain. Not cool. And when given the quietus of an argument, I'd pick up my bag and bolt off. But not before cussing a few vulgarities.
We are still the same persons known to each other since two years ago. But one day we may find ourselves asking, "When you know me, I'm already like this. What's wrong?" SQ could say the same words many months back and they seemed hilarious. We mostly laughed it off. Fast forward to now, I could offended by the same statement. Have I over-reacted? Probably unknown to me, things have changed in the most small and gradual manner I have no idea of. When friends become lovers, is change inevitable? We do develop slightly different expectations of people who become our lovers. Furthermore, this relationship involves two great friends who become friends in love with each other.
How do I want to play this? Two great friends in love? Two lovers who share a great friendship? Or simply two persons in love? Would the difference between any of the above matter?
I've been dishing out relationship advices to friends, but now I'm in it, it's pretty bemusing. SQ said it's probably because I haven't been in a relationship for a long time. Perhaps. I could only think of me myself and Angie when shopping at H&M. I want to buy him a shirt. Then again I'd think that I could buy me-self another fabulous top with that same amount of money. I'm quite a selfish shite in that sense. It may reflect how I'd behave in other departments of life.
Maybe I should discuss this with my good friend SQ. He may be experiencing similar problems with his current squeeze, Angie. She's quite the bitch I heard.

My girlfriend, Liming, is getting hitched this year in Nov/Dec. The bunch of us are all very very excited for her. Especially me. Heh. I've volunteered to coordinate the day's events and even thought of decoration, colours, flowers, food... Oh I keep a portfolio of all the lovely wedding dresses too! I'm not a workaholic, just anal about organising events hah!
It's too bad I wasn't there when she tried on the dresses. But with the rest of the girls around, Liming wouldn't be lack of good advices. =)
Whatever it is, just don't ever (never) appoint me as your emcee. I would like to not embarrass myself in public.
Weddings are lovely. Especially the ones you truly want to be a part of.

writings in the air

Rudely woken up,
By rumbling of morning traffic, smog and all
Fruitless attempts to muffle out the annoying sounds of life
I slumped myself next to the coffee machine,
Two sips but no solace found
I tiptoed back to bed, found you
lying quietly under the duvet
Still asleep, still unfallen
Steadying my breath
with yours - a sedation of sorts
I lay beside you again
Under the aegis of your embrace
Not knowing where else I'd have been.

This is insanely touching. Days with My Father by Philip Toledano records his aging father's last days and how much love Philip felt for his father since his mother's death brought them closer together. Insanely. Touching.

You swear to catch me if I fall
but never sure I'll do the same.
Just once I say
For better or worse richer or poorer
The rain can fall and I won't care.
