It's typically me to walk all over the island just to find that one thing to satisfy my hungry taste buds. And I did just that, yesterday and today.
The Best Friend was supposed to meet me yesterday and thereafter I'll bring her for some fine authentic Hakka cuisine near my office in Chinatown. Oh well, work prevailed so I was on my own. And when my tummy's ready for a pig out, there's no turning back. But it's Saturday; good food in such places sells out by noon.
True enough, my favourite Yong Tau Fu store at Mosque Street was clearing out at 3p.m.. Fine. I walked back to Neil Road - a Peking restaurant which sells tasty Ja Jiang Mien and Fried Red Bean Pancakes is near by. Closed. Fine. I didn't want to settle my lunch at the food market near OG building. If you think good food exists there, you certainly haven't tried really good food. Not wanting to give up, I hastily walked to the Maxwell Food Centre. I thought of chicken rice, curry chicken noodles, lo mai chi, on-ne on-ne (tapioca cake) and fried oyster cakes.
So right, I had my fill of chicken rice (not the Tian Tian one. will add the name when I recall) but Lo Mai Chi (one of my favourite Cantonese sweets - soft fluffy powdery chewy thingy with peanut & coconut filling) was sold out. Fried Oyster Cake, you're in luck.
I've been passing by this stall for the longest time but haven't sunk my teeth in this yet. I ordered an usual version of the cake - a deep-fried batter of oyster, minced pork, coriander, prawns and a few peanuts to top it off. Then I specifically asked for an only-prawn batter. Trust me, when you pry open the cake, the hot smoldering steam winds up into your face - it's almost like heaven. Nothing beats piping hot food in your hands waiting for you to devour it. If only it snows in Singapore.
Oh well, I was so engrossed in stuffing the cake into my mouth, I forgot to capture the Kodak moment. So yeah, gotta 'borrow' pictures of the heavenly delight. Mmm... but I wouldn't be eating too much of these if I were you. Dipped into a knee-deep wok of oil - what do you think?
