a king's feast

It has never occurred to me that we'd find good decent Chinese food along Kitchener Road. Only Komala's Vegeterian Food for the Indians came to my mind. Then last evening, SQ brought me this little gem restaruant which his family loves - Pu Tien.

It was interesting to learn that SQ's mother is a Xing Hwa. Before this, the most exotic dialect I've ever heard of is... Hakka. And I love its cuisine. No doubt, I'm quite in love with Xing Hwa's cuisine after last night's feast. No pictures no talk, so here's what we had...

STARTERS:

Iced Bitter Gourd with sweet syrup

Seaweed (Xing Hwa's specialty)

Drunken Cockles

Steamed Bamboo Clam with Minced Garlic

Mixed Cold Pork Intestine
(I'm glad SQ didn't tell me what this is after I had a piece)

Cold Pork Belly with Garlic

SIDE DISHES:
Stir-fried Kailan with Beancurd Skin (this is fab!)

Deep-fried Yam

Deep Fried Yam with Duck Meat

Hang on I'm not done...

SEAFOOD:

Deep Fried China Oysters

Deep Fried Tenggiri Fish
(love this one to bits - thinly sliced and not over-fried to driness)

Steamed Prawn with Minced Garlic

Lotus Leaf Steamed Crab with Vermicelli

Nearly there...

SOUP:

Braised Beancurd with Chinese Cabbage Soup

CHEF'S SPECIALTY:

Fried 'Xing Hwa' Bee Hoon
(the noodle is oh-so-fine that it could melt in your mouth!)

ONE MORE...

DESSERT:

White Fungus with Lotus

[all pictures from Pu Tien]

Xing Hwa/Heng Hua cuisine has lotsa seafood. One should try the fried crispy seaweed. Not oily and quite fragrant. The cuisine is generally light and naturally favoured. Sorry, no chilli in sight, just lots of garlic and sweet/sour sauce.

Whatever that was presented on last night's dinner table, was suffice to feed my entire neighbourhood's malnourished children. No pun intended or jokes at any poor families' expense. Just my thought.

We had to stop SQ's dad from ordering further. Our stomachs can only fit this much. Any more, and my clothes would become very unforgiving. It's f-crazy, looking back at the amount of food ordered. Mind you, I didn't add the huge plate of Yu Sheng and some noodle soup to the list. And there were only seven of us which includes the very old grandmother who only took very tiny puny portions. Just the thought of stuffing that much food gives me the headache. Coincidentally I was under a major headache attack last night. The first few dishes took my mind off the annoying headache (tasty food helps), then when the never-ending dishes came on, I think that aggravated the headache. =P

The food and service is wonderful, nonetheless. It'd have been more enjoyable if there were less dishes but more time to savour each and every bite. Instead, we (or rather I) were chomping away as if it's a duty we had to fulfill (fast!) in order for the servers to clear the empties and bring on the next dish. Very taxing. I could probably lose all these 'stuff' when I travel to India (soon!), otherwise I could never stomach another feast like this!

P.S. I counted - 18 dishes in all. (2 dishes not pictured)
